Let's talk about objectives. The RTA strives to deliver efficient, reliable, and affordable transit options to locals and tourists alike. Doesn’t sound all that conservative, right? But here’s the kicker—our beloved city struggles to maintain a balanced budget or an operational system. Even as the RTA says they're doing a great job, real-world performance often says otherwise.
Parking is scarce, congestion is high, and everyone with a car knows it's faster to drive than wait for a bleakly maintained bus. Yet, there are throwbacks to New Orleans' golden age—the kid-glove handling of the vintage streetcars that gives tourists a picture-perfect trip through town—a nod to conservative values of preserving the old while improving the new.
But why worry about practical solutions or economic feasibility when you can slap a rainbow sticker on the side of a streetcar and hope for the best, right?
RTA's glossy marketing materials and colorful maps might lure the unsuspecting to believe it’s all sunshine and second-lines. Yet, if you scratch the surface, you’ll find a different story. In theory, an equitable transit system means that resources are spread evenly across various neighborhoods, especially benefiting lower-income areas. But wouldn't the greatest equality be a system where everyone gets to their destination safely and on time?
